I’ve used Kadence Blocks for over five years now. Before that, I purchased and used paid versions of popular block plugins like GenerateBlocks and even Elementor Pro.

But it was only after I came across the Kadence Blocks and Kadence Theme combo that I switched to Kadence. And I haven’t looked back since!

Kadence Blocks is one of the most well-rounded WordPress block plugins on the market. Don’t get me wrong. There are tons of great options out there. But none that can compete with the features and quality of Kadence Blocks.

What is Kadence Blocks?

Kadence Blocks is a WordPress plugin that extends the editing capabilities of the default WordPress Gutenberg editor. It also adds custom block types to the WordPress editor to help you design websites without code.

Kadence Blocks is compatible with all block-based themes as it builds on the core WordPress block editor. You can use it with popular WordPress themes like Astra, GeneratePress, and even the Kadence Theme.

Kadence Blocks is available in two versions: free and pro. With over 300,000 active installations, the free version is available for download on the WordPress plugin repository, and you can buy the paid version from the official Kadence WP website.

Now that you’re familiar with Kadence Blocks, let’s start with my Kadence Blocks review where I test its features, ease of use, performance, and security.

Everything included the free version of Kadence Blocks

Kadence Blocks is packed with features. It provides extended versions of core WordPress blocks like row and paragraph and custom block types like Countdown, Count up, and Show More.

For that reason, I rate the features of the free version of Kadence Theme as a solid 5 out of 5. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect from Kadence Blocks free.

Customizable defaults

The block default settings are one of my favorite features of Kadence Blocks. The way it works is simple: you add a block to the WordPress editor, customize its settings, and save those as the default settings.

The next time you add the same block to a page or post, it’ll use those settings automatically. You won’t need to set things like padding and margins every single time and can start adding your content and designing your website instantly.

As simple as this feature sounds, it has saved me hundreds of hours of work and made creating consistent designs across different pages and posts much easier.

If you spend a lot of time designing WordPress websites or just want to simplify designing one, I recommend checking out Kadence Blocks for this feature alone.

Kadence Blocks offers the following block types for free:

Many blocks, like the Row Layout, Section, and Image, are similar to the ones WordPress offers. However, others like Google Maps, Icon Lists, Info Box, and Lottie Animations are unique to Kadence.

The custom Kadence block types make designing WordPress websites extremely easy. With fully customizable design elements at your fingertips, the only thing limiting what’s possible is your imagination.

Color and background controls

Colors are a big part of your website’s branding. And Kadence Blocks makes reusing colors across your website effortless.

Kadence Blocks offers a dedicated settings panel called Blocks Control, where you can set and customize the default colors available inside Kadence Blocks. That means all you need to do is set it up once and never worry about it again.

Whenever you need to use a specific color for a text block or add a background color to your row layout, Kadence Blocks will allow you to do it with a few clicks. No remembering hex codes or worrying about inconsistent branding across your site.

Speaking of backgrounds, Kadence Blocks simplifies using gradients, overlays, blends, and images as your row layout or section backgrounds.

You don’t need CSS skills or custom code to add parallax effects. Everything is nestled neatly inside a Style tab for each block. It doesn’t get any easier than that!

Powerful typography controls

Besides colors, fonts play a massive role in creating a brand identity. That’s why famous brands like Uber, Cisco, Alienware, The North Face, and Walmart use custom typography styles to distinguish their brands from the competition.

Kadence understands that and gives you complete control over your website typography with access to over 900+ Google fonts. Besides choosing the font family, you can customize the font size, weight, height, and letter case from the block settings.

And if that’s not enough, Kadence Blocks lets you create cool effects like typed text without additional plugins. You can also add icons to your text, highlight parts of the text, and even create text shadows.

Remember: this is just with the free version of Kadence Blocks. You get all that customizability without paying a single cent.

Layout controls

The Row Layout block is the foundation of virtually everything you’ll create with Kadence Blocks. It’s where all the magic happens and one of the first blocks you’ll use to design content sections on most pages.

The workflow for building content sections with Kadence Blocks functions like this: you add a row layout block, select the number of columns for the row layout, and then add other content blocks inside them to design your website.

The row layout basically acts like a container for other block types, with the columns acting like dividers to organize the blocks.

What I love about the Kadence row layout is that you can build anything from simple feature grids to complex pricing tables. Kadence also gives you tons of control options, like setting the max width and max height, and even allows you to add custom CSS to the block.

More importantly, Kadence Blocks does a great job of making the row layout extremely easy to use. As someone who has used other block plugins like GenerateBlocks, I find Kadence Blocks more intuitive and easy to use.

Padding and margin controls

Consistency is key when designing content sections, like a feature grid or adding multiple sections to a page. The core Gutenberg blocks only allow you to add padding and margin to a few blocks. But Kadence lets you do it for all its blocks.

You can adjust the padding and margin controls for desktop, tablet, and mobile devices separately. That makes it easy to ensure your website displays correctly no matter what device your visitors use.

Padding and margin settings are located inside the Advanced settings tab. You can use a slider tool to use the preset None, XS, SM, MD, LG, XL, and 2XL values or click the settings icon to enter pixel values manually.

Kadence is also working on improving the padding and margin control settings. So, you can expect much more control over block spacing soon.

User-based block visibility

Kadence Blocks has a cool feature called Block Visibility that allows you to control block visibility for different users on your website. That means you can show certain blocks to specific types of users and hide them from others.

For example, let’s say you have multiple author accounts on your website. You can restrict access to specific block settings and even entire blocks, such as row layouts or form blocks, by setting minimum user role requirements from the Blocks Visibility section in the Block Controls tab.

Another way you can use Block Visibility is to restrict setting changes to Administrator accounts. That way, all other users can add and use the blocks, but they won’t be able to change the design or layout or accidentally update the block defaults.

Responsive controls

Want granular control over your website layouts across different devices? That’s easy with Kadence Blocks.

Whether you’re using a row layout or an advanced text block, Kadence allows you to manually assign block settings for different devices. You can assign font sizes for desktop, tablet, and mobile devices and even set custom padding for each device.

Kadence also lets you choose the collapse order of columns for row layouts and the grid layout settings for each device type.

Efficient code loading

You’ve probably heard that Kadence Blocks is superfast. But the way Kadence Blocks ensures great performance despite offering so much functionality is quite simple.

Basically, Kadence Blocks only loads JS and CSS code for blocks used on each page. That way, there’s no unnecessary code, and the overall page size is as low as possible.

Don’t worry, I didn’t just take their word for it. I actually tested it out to see if it was true.

I installed Kadence Blocks on a test site and created 2 blog posts: 1 with a Kadence Advanced Gallery block and 1 only with core WordPress blocks. Then, I opened both posts in a browser and inspected their page resources. Here’s what I found:

Kadence Blocks code only loads on the post with Kadence Blocks in it. The post using Core WordPress blocks didn’t load any Kadence Blocks code.

Drop-in design library

The Kadence Blocks design library is a fantastic tool for designing websites without starting from scratch. It offers many cool design templates for different types of content, like hero areas, galleries, blog layouts, and contact forms.

And here’s the best part — you don’t need to switch themes to use the design library. The Kadence design library works with all Gutenberg-based WordPress themes. That means you can keep using the theme you love and still make the most of the Kadence design library.

Adding a block pattern from the Kadence design library is super easy. Just click Design Library in the top toolbar of the WordPress editor, select the Patterns tab, and choose a template to import into your page or post.

You’d be surprised at how quickly you can build entire pages using just the Kadence design library. I love the Kadence design library, and I’d say it’s my top three favorite Kadence Blocks features.

Built-in SVG Icons

Kadence Blocks comes with a massive collection of 1500+ SVG icons. You can change their color, size, and, in some cases, stroke weight too. Plus, because they are SVG icons, they resize across devices without losing quality.

Another great feature of the Kadence Blocks icons is that they are free for personal and commercial projects. You don’t need to purchase a license or add attribution disclaimers to your site.

And like all things Kadence, they’re super easy to use. You can use them independently with the Icon blocks, add them to your text using the Text (Adv) block, and even add them to buttons with the Buttons block.

Pexels library integration

Kadence recently introduced a new Pexels integration with version 3.1.16, bringing the entire Pexels library of attribution-free images into your WordPress website. They’ve neatly placed it inside the media library modal so you can access it whenever you add a media file.

The Kadence-Pexels integration allows you to search the entire Pexels library for attribution-free images, select one or more images, and download the images directly onto your server with SEO-friendly file names and ALT texts.

All images downloaded are automatically optimized for web display so your website looks pixel-perfect at all times.

Another cool feature is that you can turn off the Pexels integration if you don’t want to use it. Open Kadence Blocks Controls and turn off the Pexels Image Picker toggle in the Pexels Library Search section.

Premium features included in Kadence Blocks Pro

Kadence Blocks free offers so many features that it might leave you wondering if it’s worth upgrading to the paid version.

And you’re not wrong.

Kadence Blocks Pro adds some cool features to the already powerful Kadence Blocks plugin. But unless you’re building a website that’ll make you money, like a membership site or online store, you can do without most of those features.

That’s why I rate the premium features of Kadence Block Pro 4 out of 5. They’re worth the money, but only if you need them.

Let’s dig into everything Kadence Blocks Pro offers to find out if it’s worth the upgrade for you.

Advanced blocks and features

Upgrading to Kadence Blocks Pro gives you access to the following additional block types:

1. Dynamic HTML.
2. Dynamic List.
3. Image Overlay.
4. Modal.
5. Portfolio Grid/Carousel.
6. Post Grid Carousel.
7. Advanced Slider.
8. Split Content.
9. User Info.
10. Video Popup.

In addition to those blocks, you also get some helpful add-ons for the gallery, form, and countdown blocks, and new features like Page-specific scripts and access to the Pro Design Library.

These features are perfect for monetized blogs and WooCommerce stores that make money from their websites. If that’s you, consider upgrading to Kadence Blocks Pro and even Kadence Theme Pro to use its powerful hooked elements feature.

Custom Icons

Custom icons are a small yet effective way to give your website a unique look. With Kadence Blocks Pro, you can add custom icons to your website and customize their color and size without using third-party plugins.

I appreciate Kadence including this feature with their pro plugin. But I hope they streamline the process of adding custom icons in the future.

Currently, the way you add custom icons to Kadence is as follows:

1. Create or download custom icons as SVG files.
2. Go to Icomoon, convert the icons to font files, and download them as a ZIP file.
3. Extract the ZIP file on your PC and upload the JSON file to Kadence.

The next time you add any Kadence Blocks that support icons, your custom icons will be in a separate section of the Icon Picker tool.

While the process is pretty simple, I would’ve liked to see an option to directly upload the SVG icons to Kadence Blocks instead of going through Icomoon. However, despite the extra steps, I appreciate the feature and its implementation in Kadence Blocks.

Dynamic content blocks

Dynamic content is any content pulled from the database based on certain conditions. Things like product stock and even post content, for that matter, qualify as dynamic content since they’re stored in the WordPress database.

Kadence Blocks Pro lets you use dynamic content on your website in two ways:

1. You can configure dynamic content blocks such as Dynamic HTML and Dynamic List to load dynamic content based on specific parameters.
2. You can use the Dynamic Content option in Kadence and core WordPress blocks like paragraph, heading, text, and button.

You can do all kinds of fun things with the dynamic content feature of Kadence Blocks Pro.

For instance, if you’re using the Dynamic HTML block, you can assign a source such as the current post or any other post or page on your site and configure the block to display content such as the Post/Page Excerpt or Author details.

Or, you can simply add a text block and use the Dynamic Content option to change your text based on certain conditions.

For example, you can insert post or page details into your page. You can even create custom post types using a plugin like Advanced Custom Fields and plug those into the your content.

Kadence also gives you purpose-built blocks like Portfolio Grid/Carousel, Post Grid/Carousel, and User Info to easily create dynamic content sections.

The dynamic content blocks in Kadence Blocks Pro are extremely versatile. But when you combine them with plugins like Advanced Custom Fields and the Hooked Elements feature in Kadence Theme Pro, you can do some truly amazing things with your website.

Page-specific CSS and JS

Need to add custom tracking codes to a page? Or do you want to add custom JavaScript to a page without loading it across your entire site? Kadence Blocks Pro has your back.

Kadence Blocks Pro gives you a simple way to add page-specific scripts to posts and pages.

Just click the Kadence icon in the top toolbar of the WordPress editor, expand the Page Scripts section, and click on Custom CSS and JS. Then, Paste your custom code in the Custom CSS and JS popup and click Save/Close.

It’s truly that easy. No messing with the functions.php file or worrying about adding unnecessary bloat to your entire site.

Kadence Pro Design Library items

If there’s one feature that makes Kadence Blocks Pro worth investing in, it’s the Pro Design Library.

When you upgrade to Kadence Blocks Pro, you get access to the entire design library from Kadence, which contains hundreds of amazing content section templates.

You have everything from hero section templates to product loop sections and page templates for home, about, pricing, and services pages.

All it takes is a couple of clicks, and you can design an entire page by combining different section templates in under two minutes. From there, you need to replace the placeholder text and images with your content, and you’re ready to launch in under an hour. How cool is that?

Conditional form fields

The Kadence Blocks Pro 2.0.14 update added support for conditional form fields in the Advanced Form Block. This feature allows you to show or hide form fields based on user inputs and is exclusively available to Kadence Blocks Pro users.

With Kadence Blocks Pro enabled you’ll see a new section called Conditional Field in the Advanced settings tab of the Form (Adv) block.

Expanding the section reveals the Enable Conditional Field toggle. Activating the feature allows you to set the show or hide behavior based on certain conditions being met in other fields.

You can use this to create dynamic quote forms for a B2B business or accept online orders for your restaurant. There are so many possibilities.

Kadence Blocks ease of use testing

One of the things I like about Kadence Blocks is how easy it is to use. I’d even go as far as to say that this is one of the best WordPress block plugins for ease of use.

Kadence, the company, takes a very thoughtful approach to designing its products. They prioritize simplicity so beginners can use their products and include enough features that advanced users will feel right at home.

As someone who’s used Kadence Blocks to build multiple websites, I can confidently say it scores a solid 5 out of 5 when it comes to ease of use.

Here’s a quick overview of how easy it is to perform basic tasks with Kadence Blocks.

Installing Kadence Blocks and upgrading to the Pro version

Installing Kadence Blocks is super easy. Just follow these steps:

1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New.
2. Search for “Kadence Blocks” in the search bar. The first search result, Gutenberg Blocks by Kadence Blocks – Page Builder Features, is the one you need to install.
3. Select Install Now, wait for the installation to complete, and click Activate.

That’s it. Kadence Blocks is installed and ready to use.

Upgrading to Kadence Blocks Pro is a little more work. But that’s only because you need to sign up for an account and pay for the subscription. Here’s how to upgrade to Kadence Blocks Pro in a few steps.

Go to the Kadence WP website and select a plan. Enter your email address, billing address, and payment information, agree to Kadence’s terms and conditions, and click Place Order.

Log in to your Kadence account and select Download Files. Find the Kadence Blocks Pro listing, select Download, and save the file on your computer.

Then, go to your WordPress admin panel, select Plugins > Add New, and choose Upload Plugin to open the plugin upload form.

Click Choose File, upload the Kadence Blocks Pro zip file, and select Install Now. Once the plugin installs, choose Plugin Activate to complete the installation.

You’ll see a new banner in your WordPress admin notifying you that Kadence Blocks Pro needs to be activated. Select Click here to go to the Kadence License Activation page.

Enter your API License Key and API License Email, and select Activate. You can find those details inside your Kadence account under License Keys.

Kadence Blocks Pro is ready to use as soon as you click Activate. Everything works instantly, and you can start designing your website straightaway.

Kadence Blocks performance testing

The Kadence Theme aced performance tests in my Kadence Theme review. It achieved near-perfect PageSpeed scores with WooCommerce, Kadence Blocks, and RankMath installed!

Earlier in this Kadence Blocks review, I tested Kadence Blocks’ intelligent script loading to see if Kadence Blocks loads any unnecessary code. My tests proved that Kadence only loads scripts for the blocks on a post or page.

But despite those tests, I retested Kadence Blocks performance by setting up a new Cloudways WooCommerce site on a 1GB DigitalOcean VPS.

This time, I only installed Kadence Blocks and Kadence Blocks Pro in addition to the plugins Cloudways installs.

Then, I designed two pages using Kadence Blocks: a detailed home page with filler content and a blog post, and tested them using Google PageSpeed Insights.

Here are the results of of my Kadence Blocks performance tests:

As you can see, Kadence Blocks delivers the same perfect test scores without any advanced performance optimizations. That means with a few tweaks you could achieve incredible page load speeds with Kadence Blocks.

Based on those results, I can confidently rate Kadence Blocks’ performance a solid 5 out of 5. Kadence has done a great job with developing a clean and fast blocks plugin.

Kadence Blocks SEO features review

Before I share my review of Kadence Blocks SEO features, I believe it’s worth mentioning that you shouldn’t expect a block plugin to optimize your website SEO. However, since Kadence has some SEO-friendly features, I decided to include them in my Kadence Blocks review.

The Accordion block by Kadence Blocks allows you to add FAQ schema to your content. The FAQ schema tells search engines like Google that the content on your website is displayed in a question-and-answer format.

By making it easier for search engines to understand your content, Kadence gives you the best chance to rank your content for things like featured snippets, and People also ask.

Like I said earlier, SEO isn’t something you should expect from a page-building plugin. But Kadence has a few features that make your job optimizing for search engines a little easier.

Plus, when you factor in that Kadence Blocks’ clean code and intelligent script loading improves your website performance, it’s easy to rate Kadence Blocks SEO 5 out of 5.

Kadence Blocks security review

Every WordPress plugin, even popular ones like Elementor, occasionally suffers from bugs and vulnerabilities. And Kadence Blocks is no different.

During my Kadence Blocks security review, I only found one major vulnerability report for Kadence Blocks.

Luckily, the Kadence team quickly identified this issue and released a patch to fix the vulnerability before hackers could exploit Kadence sites.

I also looked into the Kadence Blocks changelog for both the free and paid versions to see how proactive Kadence is with fixing bugs and issues, and the results speak for themselves.

Kadence is quick to roll out updates for both versions to ensure any known issues in the plugin are fixed as soon as possible. And for that reason, I can confidently rate Kadence Blocks security 5 out of 5.

Kadence Blocks documentation and support

Kadence Blocks’ ease of use helps a lot when you’re getting started with it. But for a plugin that’s packed with features, you will need both documentation and support to help you make the most of it.

Luckily, Kadence has your back. It gives you multiple documentation and support options for both the free and paid versions.

If you like to do things yourself, you have the Kadence Blocks documentation to guide you through the basics. While the documentation is less comprehensive than I would have liked, it’s a great starting point for beginners.

You also have the official Kadence Blocks community forum and Kadence private Facebook group where you can connect with other users and Kadence developers to ask questions.

Kadence also offers a free support ticket system for their free users and a premium support option for paid users.

Since using Kadence Blocks, I’ve only had to reach out to their support 2 or 3 times. And when I did, I found the overall support experience helpful.

All things considered, I rate Kadence Blocks’ support and documentation 4.5 out of 5. They lose half a point only because their product documentation needs more work. Otherwise, there’s almost nothing to complain about.

Kadence Blocks Roadmap: What’s in store for the future

One of my favorite things about Kadence Blocks is that the Kadence team is always working on adding new features to the plugin and is extremely open to community feedback.

They recently introduced features like the Pexels integration and the ability to use YouTube videos as background videos. They’re also working on some useful upgrades to the plugin, such as more dynamic content support through ACF and improvements to the image block.

But I’m super excited about the things they’ve planned for future upgrades. One of them is a timeline feature that’ll allow you to design timelines using content or post data. That’ll make it much easier to create unique-looking blog pages and timelines for different scenarios.

For instance, let’s say you have a simple website for your business and only need the modal feature or a better slider block. In that case, consider adding those features using free plugins instead of upgrading to Kadence Blocks Pro.
